The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has announced further action to deal with air quality and protect the health of Bexley residents, while also addressing our concerns on the need to improve public transport in Bexley and the impact on low-income households and small businesses during a time of a cost of living crisis.

The ULEZ is expanded across London on 29th August 2023.

Bexley suffers over 162 premature deaths each, year with dangerous levels of air pollution and, Bexley Labour Councillors support the aim to reduce air pollution and protect the health of Bexley residents.

The vast majority of vehicles used in London are already ULEZ compliant, this is estimated at around 85%, so most drivers will not pay any charge. Bexley residents can check if your vehicle is compliant here.

In our consultation response, we raised concerns that the scrappage scheme needs to be larger than the previous scheme, the impact on residents with disabilities, low incomes and small business and the need to keep improving public transport in Bexley.

We are pleased that the Mayor has heard our concerns and responded with exemptions for disabled car users and a £110 million scrappage scheme to support low income families and small business. Applications for the scheme will launch on 30th January 2023,

Cllr Mabel Ogundayo (Labour group Deputy Leader) said:

‘We are pleased that the Mayor has listened to our concerns and has introduced exemptions for disabled car users and introduced a substantial £110million scrappage scheme to support low-income households and small businesses’

Cllr. Stefano Borella (Labour Group Leader) said:

‘Bexley residents deserved better air quality and health outcomes and the Mayor with this announcement will do that, in addition I am delighted that the Mayor has announced the biggest expansion of bus routes in outer London’

Bexley Labour group will continue to engage with the Mayor of London as the ULEZ expansion is launched, to improve public transport and lobby for the improved bus routes that Bexley residents need to travel across the borough.
